Face Pain and Chiropractic

Pain in the face is a somewhat common complaint in Chiropractic patients. Often the pain can be referred from the joints or muscles of the neck. The condition known as trigeminal neuralgia causes pain in the face and is a largely unexplained condition. It is unknown as well if whiplash injury is a direct cause trigeminal neuralgia. In some cases light touch to the face causes extreme pain. Trigeminal neuralgia is generally described as a sudden, electric like pain that effects one side of the face. The pain occurs in bouts and spontaneously. The pain may also be an unbearable aching.
Acupuncture is one possible treatment for trigeminal neuralgia. Pain radiated to the face by the joints and muscles of the neck is generally of different character than trigeminal neuralgia and is usually responsive to Chiropractic methods.
