The nerves and Chiropractic

The skin of the human body is arranged in sensory areas called dermatomes. A dermatome is a sensory area supplied by one set of spinal nerves. An example that Chiropractors deal with regularly is the spinal dermatomes of the lower back. Certain types of lower back pain can cause areas of numbness or pain on either the side, top or outside of the foot. The area of numbness or pain may correspond with a certain spinal level.
The nerves that exit the spine are particularly sensitive to pressure (especially from such sources as a herniated lumbar disc). Pressure on the nerve can lead to temporary disfunction of the nerve. Pressure on the nerve root can lead to a loss of muscle tone and mass. Diabetes may also be the cause of neuropathy that effects muscle tone and mass.
The peripheral nerves aren’t as susceptible to pressure as the nerves coming off the spine. Many peripheral nerve conditions are successfully treated by the Chiropractic technique of myofascial release. One such condition that is often responsive to Chiropractic myofascial release is pronator teres syndrome in the arm.
One of the most serious conditions effecting the nerves is known as RSD or reflex sympathetic dystrophy. RSD can be a consequence of any condition that causes pain or injury. RSD is considered to follow as a secondary condition to an injury or condition that causes 4 months of unrelenting pain. Often changes in the skin accompany RSD. The skin may become smooth and lack tone. In RSD pain in the effected area is quite severe and can be aggravated by virtually any touching of the area. Motion may also aggrevate the pain of RSD. Pain may start in one area and spread to effect the entire limb as well. The pain may be made worse by actively or passively moving the joints. Tenderness of the area is always present and is much more severe than one would expect.
RSD is a very challenging condition to treat. Acupuncture is one alternative medicine treatment that may be of benefit to the RSD patient.
