Signs of serious back pain and Chiropractic treatment

The effectiveness of Chiropractic care for lower back pain is well known. Chiropractic adjustments are particularly effective in the treatment of sacro-iliac joint pain as well as pain due to locking of the joints of the lower back (facet joints).
Chiropractors are trained to recognize signs of back pain that may relate to fractures, disc herniations, infection and tumors.
Severe accidents and injuries always are cause for concern and x rays are most often the first course of action. A fever in association with lower back pain may indicate an infection of the spine. Numbness in the crotch are is a sign of nerve impingement and is often an indication of more severe problems. Bladder disfunction in association with lower back pain is also cause for concern and referral for immediate medical care. Pain that is worse at night or does not vary in character or intensity with position may indicate more serious problems.
Pain that extends into the legs is often known as sciatica. Sciatica is a condition which may be intermittent in nature and is often associated with a herniation of the lumber disc. Problems walking or with lifting a foot off the ground during a walking stride may indicate the nerves of the back are being impinged. Pain that is worse with coughing or sneezing is another indication of lower back pain associated with a disc problem.
