Sciatica and hip pain. Chiropractic treatment

Sciatica refers to pain that runs down the leg and may have several causes. Disc problems are commonly linked to sciatica but other causes are possible as well. Disc problems are often characterized by multiple episodes of back pain followed by an episode of back pain with sciatica or sciatica alone.
In some cases pain in the buttocks and leg may develop gradually over several weeks without an type of injury. In such cases the cause is often the piriformis muscle. The piriformis is a muscle that is located along the side of the buttocks and turns the leg out. The sciatic nerve may be compressed by the piriformis muscle. In about 15% of the population the sciatic nerve runs through the muscle which maked the nerve more likely to be compressed.
Myofascial release techniques are the most helpful Chiropractic technique for treatment of sciatica caused by the piriformis muscle. Chiropractic adjustments of the sacro-iliac joints are also helpful.
Problems with the Sacro-iliac joints may also cause pain to run down the leg but the pain does not typically travel past the knee. In piriformis compression of the sciatic nerve the pain may travel past the knee.
